Supporting local businesses and the wise use of council resources.

We all benefit from a vibrant local economy and a council focused on delivering maximum value for money to residents and businesses.

My MBA and AICD qualifications, coupled with my experience as a Strategy Director for brands like Cricket Australia and Cadbury, have equipped me with the strategic thinking and leadership skills necessary to drive positive change.

"Kate has consistently demonstrated strong leadership and unwavering commitment to supporting local businesses throughout the Chapel Street Precinct. Her steadfast advocacy has been crucial in fostering our resilience and facilitating our growth."

Matt Lanigan, General Manager, Chapel Street Traders Association

Achievements this term

Champion for Local Businesses

Successfully fought to maintain funding for Chapel Street and Toorak Road Traders Associations, empowering them to thrive through coordinated marketing. I've also ensured local businesses have a voice at Council as Chair of the Economic and Place Development Committee for over three years.

Fiscal Responsibility

Spearheaded Council's first-ever value-for-money program, achieving significant savings while maintaining essential services. I also championed a rate freeze during COVID-19, ensuring we have one of the lowest rates in Victoria.

Revitalized Streetscapes

Secured grants and implemented initiatives to enhance our streetscapes, including facade uplift grants for local shops. I also actively encourage local businesses to join Stonnington's vendor panel, creating more opportunities for local success.

Innovative Funding Solutions

Driven a new focus on securing philanthropy and sponsorships, enabling us to achieve more for our community with existing resources.

“We have been extremely grateful for the advocacy and support Kate has given us. Kate’s ability to truly listen and understand the needs of local businesses has been instrumental. Her collaborative approach makes a tangible difference for our businesses and our entire community.”

Challenges to Come

Revitalizing Chapel Street

The current state of Chapel Street is not meeting our expectations and aspirations for the area. We need to address issues like safety, greenery and cleanliness, to restore its vibrancy, attract new shoppers and make it a source of pride for our community.

Responsible Financial Stewardship

With a tight budget looming, we need smart solutions to meet community expectations. This means prioritizing core services, pursuing innovative funding models, and ensuring value-for-money in every dollar spent.

Strategic Asset Management

We must maximize the value of key assets like Prahran Market and our sports facilities. This includes exploring opportunities for modernization, improved accessibility, and ensuring they remain community hubs for years to come.

Support for Local Businesses

Our local retailers are the heart of South Yarra. I'll continue to champion their success through initiatives that drive foot traffic, reduce red tape, and create a supportive environment for them to thrive.

The Evolution of the Prahran Market

The market needs to evolve to address foot traffic and spend decline over the decades, but it needs to be done in a way that respects and builds on the passion and love locals have for it. A thriving market is great for locals and it great for traders.
