The State Government wants to rezone suburban South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor.

  • Height: The State’s new Activity Center Plan will allow 4–6 storeys on local streets—even in heritage areas and regardless of the width of the street.

  • Infrastructure: Their plan adds thousands of new neighbours but zero investment in core infrastructure like new parks, schools or drainage.

  • Your Say: Your right to comment on developments in your own street will be removed.

The State Government is proposing the most significant change to Stonnington’s planning rules in decades. We all support increasing the housing supply to solve the crisis, but we believe everyone—current and future residents—deserves to live in a neighborhood that is well-designed and sustainable.

Stonnington is already doing the heavy lifting. In 2021, 75% of our dwellings were already medium or high density, compared to just 34% in Greater Melbourne. Council's local plan already identifies space for 67,000 new homes—that is 17,000 more than the State’s own target.

The State’s plan forces 33% of all proposed metropolitan change onto Stonnington even though we are only 1% of urban Melbourne (in land size). Even worse, it is silent on the infrastructure required to support this growth. They think that being close to a train station seems to be all the infrastructure you need to live well.

I’m concerned that our community don't understand how significant these changes will be in our streets and because of that will not provide feedback to State Government about how they don't want these changes in their streets.

Please:

  1. complete the Engage Vic survey (use my template for suggestions on how to fill it in)

  2. Write to the MPs (use my template letter to get you started)

  3. Tell your neighbours

Cut off for feedback is 22 March.

What can you do?

The deadline is Sunday, 22 March. Your voice is the only thing that can force the State to respect our local wisdom.

What are the issues?

The State’s plan is a "population thrust" without a plan for livability.

What are the Maps?

It is hard to see what is being proposed given so little information from the State at this time.

These are some images I have put together to show how the State's plan for our suburban streets is different to out plan.
